singapore: newton circus hawker center

The Newton Circus hawker center is not far distance-wise from the shiny hotels and luxury malls on Orchard Road, but under the bright lights, surrounded by the smells of seafood, curry and chili, bombarded by the calls of local merchants, it feels as though you're worlds away...
Here a circle of concrete stalls offers local cuisine: chili crab, chili stingray (recommended by an in-the-know former ex-pat), tiger prawns, noodle dishes and young coconut water, straight out of the giant green fruit.  Make your way to a stall displaying a health and cleanliness grade of at least a B- (More detailed recommendations can be found here) and order up a feast to eat outside on the picnic benches.  The market stays open until 3am so it’s a great place to catch dinner if the time change has got you off a regular eating schedule.
