warsaw: u fukiera

On a chilly day wandering around Warsaw's Old Town, I decided to treat myself to a meal at U Fukiera, one of the city's most famed destinations for authentic Polish food. Not surprisingly given the location, it doesn't get a lot of lunch traffic, so this was my dining companion...
The food was superb and the atmosphere is magical.  U Fukiera's owner, Magda Gessler is a Warsaw institution, providing the locals with excellent food and soap opera-worthy family drama.  U Fukiera is her flagship restaurant and offers her take on refined, elegant Polish food (no, that's actually not an oxymoron).  Gessler also oversees all of her restaurants' decor with her signature sense of whimsy.  Lunching there was like dining in your Polish fairy godmother's home tucked into the roots of an enchanted tree.  I started with salmon tartare and caviar and followed that with a plate of hearty, spicy Lithuanian dumplings swimming in butter.and broth, all washed down with a glass of champers.

Oh yeah, traditional Polish meals begin with a hearty slather of lard on brown bread.
