new york city: peels

"No, I'm not done with that."  I repeated that phrase no fewer than ten times during my meal at Peels, the new Freemans spinoff on Bowery.  Like Freemans, the atmosphere is pitch perfect for today's craze for down-homeyness- rough wood floorboards, Edison bulbs, chunky glassware, butcher's block tables, etc...
The service, a well-oiled machine on overdrive, was a bit aggressive, but the food was quite good.  The "regional American" menu offered a number of tempting options.  I had the stuffed squid and the fried chicken, both were prepared excellently and arrived at the table quickly.  The Shaddock's Fizz cocktail combined my two favorite liquors- Aperol and St. Germain- for a delicious result.  I would go back for dinner, but I hear that breakfast is the best meal served at Peels.  I'll let you know.
